In the Philippines, family-run retail stores are quite common. They would serve sodas and juices in a narrow plastic bag with a straw. By including a reusable metal straw (as it recently became popular in America) the metal straw doubles as a metaphor for my personal experience with americanization, but also the current environmental state of both countries.
