Balikbayan: Ukay

Ukay or Ukay-Ukay, means “to dig through”, which in this context, digging through natural materials to make clothing. This is inspired by the parades in the Philippines, where they used natural materials to create clothing, headdresses, etc. for celebratory and practical use outside of the parades. The cape, is inspired by a rain cape made of leaves, which was used in pre-colonial times. The skirt is made ut of banana leaves weaved together.
